March 2006 AR coatings to consumer display windows
Plastic window products such as those used in automotive instrument panels, cell phone and games applications now use high resolution LCD or OLED colour displays. Polycarbonate is extremely tough and durable but it has very poor
scratch resistance. As a result, a hard coat must be applied to the window surface to provide it with sufficient
scratch resistance to withstand normal consumer abuse.

Magnetron sputtering is a key thin film deposition technology widely acknowledged to produce the highest quality optical coatings. In this article, Michael Walls and Des Gibson describe the high throughput “CFM” reactive sputtering process for AR coating that is scaleable and allows any sized Laboratory to participate.
